Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
