The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
